"Alpha? What does this symbol mean?"

"Ah." Father bobbed his head as he wore a proud smile. "This symbol is a sign of allegiance for Shadowborns."

"A...lee...gest!" I struggled to say the word, but giggled and clapped my hands. "Cool!"

Father further laughed as he gently stroked my head.

"If you see someone with this symbol, Selene, they are a very important individual and hold kindness in their hearts. However, it's hard to tell because they're scary-looking."

"Why are they scary? Are they monsters?" I said the last part in a hush.

"No, Selene. They are not monsters. They're a very unique type of Shadowborn, just like you and me."

"Unique."

"Yes, unique," he repeated. "Those who carry this symbol have abilities far rarer than any Shadowborn in existence. Some have extreme strength. Others can command elements of destructive power to their fingertips. There are even some who carry a howling force of power that pushes their wolf out into physical form."

"Wha!" I gasped in surprise. "Meaning their wolf can be REAL!"

"Yes." He seemed blessed with my pure excitement as he used his free hand to shape a wolf head. "They call it the Howling Star, just like the symbol of my tattoo. Each Howling Star carries a jewel that holds extreme power inside. Power that helps a kingdom rise or allows it to fall at the hands of its wielder. Howling Stars are born heirs. They're strong Alphas with superior powers that make them easily envied by their peers, but what's worse is that they're targeted a lot."

"Hunted like us?"

"Yes. Hunted like us Shadowborns at times. But with them, they're chased, captured, and beaten until they submit to their captor. "

"That's mean!"

"Yes, it is," Father agreed. "But when they howl, Selene, they awaken the fierce shadows of the underworld. They summon the flames of hell in the color of black, and project their wolf out to create a form that resembles their strength."

"Re...sem...ble their strength. But Alpha, they're already strong!"

I put my hands up to demonstrate strength as if I had muscles, like Alpha would do with the other boys of our pack.

Father chuckled loudly as he nodded. "Yes, they are very strong, but you know what the problem is?"

"What?" I whispered with heightened curiosity.

"They don't see the strength in themselves," Father revealed and placed his large hand upon my chest. "They believe that they are weak. That they can't accomplish their dreams and are unable to see the worthiness in their own bodies. No matter their rank, regardless of whether they are surrounded by love, they think their worth isn't valid unless projected outward into a wishful fantasy."

I was fascinated by his words as he used his free hand again to form the howling wolf. "See, a wolf howls in the air for two reasons. One is to let themselves be known to the wolves that serve them and to warn those around that one of power is in the territory. The other main reason is one hidden to many. It's their howling call that makes a wish upon a star in the vast sky.
